Friday, 25 Apr 2014

The Solent LEP submitted its Strategic Economic Plan for the area to Government on the 31 March 2014. The vision for the Solent area is to:

"create an environment that will bring about sustainable economic growth and private sector investment in the Solent. It will assist this globally-competitive area to reach its full potential enabling existing businesses to grow, become more profitable and to be more greener; enabling the creation of new businesses and attracting new businesses to the region"

Developed through extensive consultation with local stakeholders, the ambitious plan is the key to unlocking a Local Growth Deal for the region and will form the basis of the Solent's negotiation with Government in the coming months.

The plan aims to position the Solent economy to compete on an international stage and, within the broader vision, contains clear objectives to:

  • Maximise the impact of the economic assets in the area and sectors with the potential for growth; promoting the area as the UKs leading growth hub for advanced manufacturing, marine and aerospace;

  • Unlock critical employment sites to enable Solent businesses to expand; particularly in the marine, maritime and advanced manufacturing sectors;

  • Enable new housing to support a growing workforce;

  • Ensure people have the right skills to access employment and support our growing sectors;

  • Provide effective support to Solent small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to enable them to grow, and;

  • Unlock innovation led growth to engage more businesses in knowledge exchange and develop links to wider Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).
