The Regional Economic Strategy (RES) 2006-2106
The Regional Economic Strategy (RES), prepared by SEEDA, sets out a strategy for sustainable growth in the South East economy over the next 20 years. It is structured around three key themes:
- Global Competitiveness – equipping businesses in South East England to compete internationally for investment and for markets for its products and services. This means building on existing concentrations of excellence in the South East by becoming more enterprising, innovative and skilled, and investing so as to ensure success is maintained.
- Smart Growth - Raising levels of prosperity per head across the South East without increasing the region’s ecological footprint through better productivity, higher levels of enterprise and by bringing more of the resident population into economic activity. This includes investing in potential to lift the prospects of underperforming areas, communities and individuals;
- Sustainable Prosperity - secured through the principles of sustainable development. Pursuing growth within environmental limits can create new opportunities for innovation and competitiveness. Quality of life in the South East is a key source of its competitive advantage, and must also be a focus for investment.
The RES has identified 8 “Diamonds for Investment and Growth” in the South East, one of which is Urban South Hampshire. These Diamonds are major concentrations of economic growth which:
- Extend beyond the boundaries of a specific local authority
- Are centred on an urban core or comprise networks of urban areas; and
- Play a leading role in the economic vitality of their broader sub-regions and as drivers of the regional economy.
SEEDA has been consulting with its partners, through the Sub-regional Partnership Review, on the setting up of a public-private partnership which will support the implementation of the RES at a sub-regional level, including working with PUSH.
More detail on the RES, and its associated implementation plan, can be found on SEEDA’s website at http://www.seeda.org.uk/RES/.
