South Hampshire Strategic Employment Zone: Acquisition of Mitigation Land

What the project is:

The acquisition of land to provide mitigation land offsetting the environmental impact of the regeneration of the South Hampshire Strategic Employment Zone (SHSEZ) and the Chickenhall lane Link Road which will open up the site for redevelopment.

Background:

Withdrawals of major engineering, cable and railway industries have seen dramatic changes in the economic base of the town of Eastleigh. These changes have however led to new opportunities and the Borough along with Hampshire County Council are working closely together to facilitate the regeneration of 130 hectares of land between the Airport and to the northern side of Bishopstoke Road. This area has been identified by PUSH as the South Hampshire Strategic Employment Zone (SHSEZ).

Comprehensive redevelopment of the site is required in a way that will maximise the benefits to the local population and the wider economy of the sub region.  Following the failure of the market to deliver the economic potential of the site, the Borough and County Council have taken a leading role in this work.  The partnership’s aim is to deliver a road scheme, to improve access, and an AAP for the area to facilitate the private sector development of the land.

The work involved in developing the scheme includes a detailed environmental appraisal and early indications are that mitigation land will have to be provided to offset the impact such a major project will have on the local environment.

The partner authorities are considering a number of alternative sites that could fulfil the objectives of this scheme, and further information will appear on this website in due course.
