What the project is:
The regeneration of the West Street Public Realm through physical improvements to support the strategic development area to the north of Fareham, maintaining Fareham’s viability as a commercial centre and countering the consequences of continued decline. The scheme includes new paving and kerbing, street lighting, tree planting and seating, CCTV, together with improvements to junction crossings.
Background:
The public realm of West Street has been in decline and there is concern this will continue without intervention to bring investment and renewed confidence in the area. The PUSH strategy identified town centres such as Fareham as a focus of new retail and commercial development as well as a key transport hub. This role will become all the more important seen alongside the proposal contained in the draft South East Plan for a Strategic Development Area to the north of Fareham (approximately 2-3 miles from Fareham town centre on the north side of the M27 motorway) which will include 10,000 homes, a district shopping centre and 121,000 square metres of employment space. This reinforced the need to enhance West Street to create a high quality public realm within Fareham town centre, as part of the strategy to attract investors and developers and strengthen Fareham’s role in the sub-regional strategy.
