What the project is:
In May 2007, the PUSH Sub-group on Enterprise, Innovation and Business Support commissioned Trends Business Research (TBR) to undertake a study on Business in Growth Sectors in South Hampshire. Funded by PUSH, the purpose of this study is to map the geographical distribution and concentration of businesses within the growth sectors and clusters in South Hampshire and to identify the interactions which take place between businesses in these sectors and in business networks. In their interim report, TBR concluded while there are a number of sectors that commend themselves to a detailed study, it is recommended to focus on the following three key sectors: Advanced Manufacturing, Advanced Business Services, and Creative and Media.
Advanced Manufacturing demonstrates the strongest potential for future growth with high levels of employment growth and evidence of strong supply chain industries. All three sectors displayed a high propensity to network and collaborate and fall into the category of high productivity that is above the average for the PUSH area. In addition the sectors possess moderate to extensive levels of support and development activities in local universities. To be finalised in October 2008, the study will identify interventions for PUSH to promote the advantages gained from developing and supporting clusters and networks in the key growth sectors.
Background
A number of past research studies have been undertaken in the PUSH area to identify future growth sectors in the sub-region and the local economies. This includes studies commissioned by PUSH, Portsmouth City Growth, Eastleigh Borough Council, and Southampton and Portsmouth City Councils, all of which forms a basis for further research. PUSH recognises it is now essential to examine the growth clusters and business networks in more detail to assess their importance and potential to drive the growth of the economy in the sub-region. Furthermore, it is crucial to identify the needs of businesses in these networks/clusters and to undertake necessary actions to enable them fulfil their growth potential.
