What the project is:
The PUSH Sustainability Working Group has commissioned an Energy Services Feasibility Study to be undertaken by an external contractor to assess initiatives to improve energy efficiency and increase sources of renewable and carbon-neutral or low carbon energy supply, in residential, industrial and commercial building stock, taking into account both new build and existing stock. The study is designed to assess approaches to energy efficiency and supply, along with reducing the energy take of existing stock. The work will also take into account the security of future energy supplies both now and over the next 20 years, risks and opportunities in emerging energy technology, emerging national policy and legislative change. The aim of the study is also to explore the scope for developing a sub regional Energy Services Company (ESCo) or a series of ESCo’s as may be deemed relevant, to assist in establishing a more effective infrastructure for low carbon and renewable forms of energy supply.
Background
One of the key drivers of PUSH’s strategy is to mitigate the impact of new development on climate change by reducing carbon emissions and planning for the highest levels of sustainable development that can reasonably be achieved. The PUSH partnership wishes to take more control of energy usage and supply in its area, to decrease the real levels of energy use and make a significant contribution to mitigating the effects of climate change and adapting to its long term consequences. Within this context, and in accordance with this commitment towards sustainable development, PUSH recognises that there is a need to plan for and provide effective new infrastructure and organisational capacity related to energy services.
