Interventions to support economic growth

  • 123

PUSH’s prime objective is to improve South Hampshire’s economic performance. This requires the provision of land for development and interventions to achieve a balanced housing market.

A ready supply of employment land of the right type and in the right places is critical, together with provision for hotel and town centre uses. A range of sizes and types of new homes including affordable housing are needed, but getting the most out of the existing housing is vital too. This means ensuring that the housing stock is in good condition, and tackling pockets of deprivation and mono-culture housing.

The South Hampshire Strategy prepared by PUSH provides guidance on these issues to inform and support the preparation of individual authorities’ plans. PUSH makes representations on those draft plans and if needed, provides evidence to public inquiries. These initiatives will ensure that South Hampshire’s development needs are met in a sustainable way and will help deliver economic growth. The PUSH note ‘South Hampshire Authorities – Fulfilling the Duty to Co-operate’ explains that by collaborating in this way through PUSH, the local authorities are fulfilling their legal duty to cooperate on strategic planning issues.

PUSH will continue to act as a facilitator, working with developers and the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) to maximise potential investment to deliver these goals.
